Daily Leader staff report

The Liberal Redskin bowling teams suffered losses to Dodge City Monday at Dodge City.

The Redskins fell to 0-2 against Western Athletic Conference opponents and was also outscored by Holcomb.

The Redskins were led by senior Chris Flowers who bowled a match high 600 series.

But the rest of the team could not support his score.

The next high series was Carl Hammock with a 526.  The “We knew it was going to be tough, Dodge City always is, but it just seemed real tough this year,” Liberal coach Robert Burkey said. “Even the home team struggled. Holcomb had gotten to bowl there last week against Dodge and Great Bend.  That was a huge advantage for them.”

Although the Redskins started slow, as they adjusted to the conditions, they steadily improved.

“We did get better each game,” he said. “That was a plus.”

By the end of the day, the Redskins made up 80 pins in one game, but it was too little, too late. Dodge City scored 2,228, Holcomb scored 2,106, and Liberal finished with 2,103.

The Lady Redskins turned in a more consistent performance but fell short of the Lady Red Demons for their first WAC loss of the season.

Erica Fowler and Brittany Odle led the way with a 473 series each.

Usually there was another bowler that developed a hot hand during a match, but that never happened for the Lady Redskins Monday.

The Lady Red Demons had two girls shoot over 540.

“That just killed us,” Burkey said. “Their No. 5 girl got hot and we had no answer.”

Both teams travel to Wichita Thursday for a match with Wichita North and Wichita Heights.  Both teams finished first and second on the girls side last year.

“This is going to be a real tough match.” Burkey said.
