The Lady Redskins have continued to show improvement, but in the last few games of the season, it has not resulted in a Western Athletic Conference win.
The Lady Redskins dropped the final game of the regular season Friday to Dodge City and were waiting to see if a coin flip would give them a home playoff game Wednesday.
And the shot that may have clinched the victory for Dodge City came on the last attempt of the third quarter when Dodge City’s Kesha Buckner, who was holding the ball to let the time run down, fired the ball toward the goal as the last few seconds rolled off the clock. The ball banked off the glass and into the hoop for three points, and the Lady Red Demons had their biggest lead of the game, 36-26.
Liberal cut the lead to five with a minute to play but turnovers and missed shots allowed Dodge City to hold the lead despite the Red Demons only connecting on three of seven free throws in the final minute of the game.
Liberal had a 12-10 lead midway through the second quarter, but a 12-4 run by Dodge City to end the half gave the Red Demons a 22-16 lead that they would never relinquish.
Justice Norah led the Lady Redskins with 16 points, and Lauren Sumner had eight. Liberal ended the season in a three-way tie with Kapaun and Andover for the third, fourth and fifth place spots in the region. A coin flip Saturday morning would determine the final placings, and if Liberal ended up third or fourth, they would host a playoff game. If they finish fifth, they will have to travel. Liberal ended the regular season 9-11.
