Another second half lead disappeared for the Redskins Friday.
Liberal dropped its fourth consecutive game with a 59-42 loss to Dodge City after having an eight-point lead early in the third quarter.
Liberal had a chance to push the lead to 10, but after a missed shot Dodge City went on an eight-minute, 20-4 run to take a 43-35 lead.
Slader McVey ended the run with a three-pointer and Jade Cathey added a basket to cut the lead to 43-40.
But the Red Demons cranked out an 8-0 run to take a 51-40 lead with 2:12 to play.
Tyson Deaton hit Liberal’s final shot of the game with 2:04 to play in the 59-42 loss.
For a little more than two quarters the Redskins were in control, breaking the patented Red Demon 3-2 zone with Deaton hitting mid-range jumpers.
Deaton scored eight points in the first half, and the Redskin defense had the Red Demons struggling to execute their offense. Liberal had a 25-21 lead at the break and shot out to a quick start to the second half when Cathey snagged a rebound and took it coast to coast for a lay-up.
Cathey then started to draw the defense and pass the ball to open Redskins. Two straight assists to DeVondre Livingston gave the Redskins a 31-23 lead, and the Red Demon offense could not find a way around the Redskins.
And then the wheels came off the Redskin wagon.
Again.
Cathey was called for his fourth foul and headed to the bench, and the Red Demons went on a 12-0 run to take a 35-31 lead.
The Redskins had a chance to cut into the lead with 24.3 seconds to go in the third when McVey was fouled, but a lane violation erased his made basket. Livingston cut the Dodge City lead to two with a buzzer beater, but that is as close as Liberal could get.
The Red Demons took over in the fourth and scored as many in the final period that they did in the entire first half.
Cathey and Deaton each scored 12 points, and Livingston had 10. McVey added six and Kenlee West scored a basket.
The loss dropped Liberal to 9-11 on the season and put the Redskins in a three-way tie for regional seedings. Liberal was tied with Kapaun and Andover for the third, fourth and fifth positions, and a coin flip Saturday morning would The determine the final placement.
Liberal will play host to Kapaun at 7 p.m. Thursday in The Big House. Liberal took the fourth seed after a coin flip on Saturday morning.
