COLBY — The Seward County Lady Saints used a hot start and a solid finish Monday night in the Colby Community Building to pick up their first conference road win of the season in a 72-57 defeat of the Colby Lady Trojans.
Seward got up 20-7 to open the game before letting the Lady Trojans back into things midway through the period but would finish the half on a tear while Colby couldn't throw the ball in the ocean, hitting just 4 first half field goals while Seward would build a 35-15 lead after 20 minutes of action. In the second half the Lady Saints would turn to the inside and to Ashlynn Knoll for their points as they pounded the ball into the post to get to the free throw line 17 times in the half after reaching it just 5 times in the first half.
Colby would make a push at around the halfway mark of the second half but Knoll was too much, scoring a career high 27 points and grabbing 11 rebounds to push Seward to the 72-57 win. Knoll was not the only Lady Saint to record a double double as Hannah Rotolo had a career high 12 assists to go along with 11 points in the win for Seward. Colby would improve after a dismal 4 of 38 shooting first half but would still finish the game shooting under 25 percent.
• The Seward County/Colby Men's game Monday night had nearly no allure. After all, the Saints went into the game 9-1 and in first place in conference play while Colby came in 2-8 and in last place. Easy win for Seward right?
While the Saints would start the game strong and would build up an early 11 point first half lead, the Trojans would close the half on a tear and would hit a three pointer as time expired to take a 34-28 lead into the break.
The Saints would chip away as the second half began but Colby was content with using all 35 seconds of the shot clock when the ball was in their hands so the Seward comeback effort was, and had to be methodical.
The Saints would finally break through as Marky Nolen ripped down a rebound and threw a one handed pass to Jeremy Jones who dunked it home to give Seward their first lead of the second half but the Trojans apparently didn't read the script that they were heavy underdogs in the game and were supposed to roll over after that happened.
They would storm back behind an enthusiastic home crowd and would retake a late lead as they looked for the upset.
The Saints would have their chances down the stretch but a pair of turnovers and a missed three pointer with under 10 seconds to go would be their demise and after a slew of free throws to end the game, the Trojans would come out with their first victory since 2006 against the Saints in what is undoubtedly the largest upset of the 2011 Jayhawk schedule thusfar.
Due to the successful Colby slow down style, the Saints got off a season low 49 shots on the night including just 18 in the second half. Jones led the Saints in scoring once again, putting up 20 as well as 5 assists while Nolen had yet another huge night for Seward, chalking up 15 points and grabbing 14 rebounds in his eighth consecutive double-double.
