LIBERAL — Ben Johnsrud and Lane Sherer combined for nearly half of Southwestern Heights’ points — 10 apiece — but Johnson City Stanton County was just too much for the Mustangs in a 67-45 loss at Seward County Community College’s Green House, Friday night.
The game was played in Liberal because of burst pipes at Southwestern Heights High School.
Stanton County’s Seth Holliday and Austin Nairn set the tone from the beginning, nailing a pair of baskets for a quick 5-0 Trojans lead.
Stanton County built an 11-4 advantage before Southwestern Heights (4-9) pulled it back to within two points on two straight baskets by Jeff Dutton.
But SC’s LLeighton Grover joined Nairn in ending the run as the Trojans increased their lead to 23-10 at the end of the first quarter.
A hoop and two free throws by Johnsrud cut it to 23-14, but the Trojans pulled back ahead at 31-15 on baskets by Holliday, Grover and Cristian Dominguez as Stanton County built its advantage to 40-22 at halftime.
Sherer nailed a trey to open the second half and make the score 40-25, but Stanton County proceeded to a 13-7 run to lead 57-32 at the end of three.
Junior Herrera added seven points, Dutton and Clayton Chase five each, James Abla and Jason Eakes two each.
The Mustangs return home on Tuesday to battle Beaver, Okla. The Duster are 14-8 overall after suffering an overtime loss to Laverne, Okla. on Friday. The game will be Beaver’s regular season finale before it heads to the district tournament next Friday.
