Lamar out-duels Liberal 51-29 PDF Print E-mail

The Liberal High School wrestling team showed some bright spots on Wednesday afternoon. But the Lamar (Colo.) Savages showed even more, downing the Redskins 51-29 in their dual, delayed a day because of cold weather.
The bright spots for Liberal came from Justin McPhail, Cody Smith, Adebayo Braimah and Trenton Wilson, who all grabbed individual victories.
The dual started at 160 pounds, and Liberal’s Tomas Saquic found himself in a battle with Lamar’s Isaac Lyons. After a scoreless first period, Lyons inched ahead in the second, and managed to pin Saquic at 1:05 of the third.
At 171, Shawn Lay was down 10-1 to Lamar’s Layne Fleshman before being pinned at 1:04 of the third.
Lamar increased its team point total to 17 when Emilio Carrillo pinned Antonio Moreno with 16 seconds left in the first period.
Then came McPhail, who had no trouble with Lamar’s Tyler Jara. Once McPhail got Jara off his feet, he was able to pin him at the 52 second mark of the first period.
Liberal’s next win came at 103 pounds when Lamar had nobody to face Shaddock Wood. Liberal returned the favor at 112 when Lamar’s Chris Johnson went un-challenged.
Those did meet in an exhibition later in the evening, with Johnson pinning Wood in the first period.
Smith’s bout at 130 pounds against Lamar’s Dakota Jara also went quickly as Smith pinned his opponent with 31 seconds left in the first period.
Adebayo Braimah won a hard-fought decision over Lamar’s Remington Stocking at 140 pounds. Stocking led 2-1 after the first period, but Braimah made a few moved to take a 6-3 lead after the second, and went on to post a 12-6 decision.
Ayodale Braimah lost a 12-2 decision to Zeb Harvey before Trenton Wilson picked up Liberal’s last win of the day in the final vartsity match.
Wilson was down 8-5 in the third period when he put a nice spin move on Baily Spitz to cut it to 8-7. Once he got Spitz on the mat, Wilson was overpowering, and pinned his opponent with 27 seconds left in the third and final period.
In other matches, Dalton Moody was pinned at 135 pounds, Michael Frazer was pinned at 119 and Jorge Nuñez was pinned at 285.
Liberal travels to Great Bend today.
