Industrial Parks and Cemetery Director Brad Beer addressed the Liberal City Commission Tuesday evening during its regularly scheduled meeting in an effort to obtain funds to complete the Liberal Cemetery irrigation project.
Two bids for the completion of the project were submitted with only a $5 difference between the two.
“In your packet is a proposal to complete the cemetery irrigation project,” Beer said. “We got two bids, one was from a company out of Wichita and one was a local company.”
Beer said the work done will complete the project. However, it will not include two mausoleum lots where burials were placed in walkways.
“This will complete the irrigation project at the cemetery, except for the two sections we will not be able to irrigate, they fill the walkways,” he said.
Commissioner Larry Koochel complimented Beer on the work he has done to keep the cemetery looking nice. On a less positive note, Koochel had received calls from constituents concerned as to why a sprinkler system was not yet up to par.
“I have had phone calls from people wondering why the sprinkler system wasn’t standard, this is a very good project,” Koochel said. “You have made that cemetery very presentable and something we are proud of.”
Beer added the section of walkway not to be included in the irrigation plan will continue to be watered manually. He said that is the only way he and his staff have been able to maintain the particular location which is located right as one enters the east gate near the mausoleum lots, Beer said.
“We drag hoses out and get them as best as we can,” Beer said.
Koochel made a motion to approve B&J Supply of Liberal to install 2,400 feet of irrigation supplies in Section 1 of the cemetery, with the exception of the two mausoleum lots, for a cost of $5,094. Koochel’s motion received a second from Vice Mayor Joe Denoyer.
Beer added in his memorandum to the commission that with the completion of this particular project, 85 percent of the cemetery will be irrigated. The project will be funded by the Cemetery Perpetual Fund. The item was unanimously approved by the commission.
