Abe Hubert shoots to sweep of South PDF Print E-mail

The South Middle School 8th grade basketball teams were swept by Garden City Abe Hubert’s Hawks on Monday evening. But the Apaches showed some promise, especially in the second half of the A game.
The South 8th graders outscored the Hawks in the second half, but a slow start in the first half doomed the Apaches in a 43-31 loss.
Abe Hubert jumped to an 11-1 lead at the end of the first quarter as the Apaches could only manage an Alberto Hernandez free throw. The Hawks increased that lead to 21-9 in the second quarter as South found its shooting stroke.
Down 17-1, the Apaches ended the first half on an 8-4 run, led by Sergio Borjas, Hernandez and Rex Heronemus.
The Apaches outscored Abe Hubert 10-9 in the third quarter. Down 26-9, Borjas cut it to 26-11. After Edgar Patino made it 28-11, South ended the third on an 8-3 run. Heronemus cut it to 15, then Borjas hit one of two free throws to make it a 14-point game.
Pedro Lara grabbed a steal and was fouled, making the second of his two free throws to cut it to 13. Alex Bermudez and Lara hit two more baskets to end the third with the Apaches down 31-19.
The two teams played evenly in the fourth and final frame as the Hawks hung on for a 43-31 win.
Scoring was fairly spread out for the Apaches, led by six points by Heronemus, Borjas and Bermudez added five each, Brandon Kisner scored 4, Hernandez and Lara three, Bryan Lozoya two.

The South B team played the closest game of the night, jumping to an 8-4 first quarter lead before eventually falling by eight to the Abe Hubert Hawks.
Bryan Lozoya opened the game with a 3-pointer, then Dario Romero hit a free throw for a 4-2 South lead. Tristan Martinez scored, followed by a free throw by Lozoya for a 7-2 lead.
The Apaches were shut out in the second quarter as the Hawks jumped to a 16-8 lead at the half.
The Apaches were down 24-14 after the third quarter, but ended the game with a 4-2 run. The Apaches missed six straight free throws in the fourth quarter.
Lozoya led South with six points, Giovanni Enriquez scored four, Tristan Martinez, Sergio Borjas, Jerry Valdez and Jose Alonso all scored two points.

The Apaches were in a 4-4 battle at the end of the first quarter, but didn’t score again until 4:31 of the fourth quarter. In the meantime, Abe Hubert went on a 25-0 run en route to a 33-point win.
Luis Medina, Marco Gonzalez and Brandon Kisner scored South’s points.
