TEXHOMA, Okla. — It’s been said the majority of learning a human does during their lifetime takes place before they reach the first grade.
The strategy the Balko Lady Bison employed Friday would certainly fit in that category.
With the Hooker Lady Dogs bearing down hard, the Lady Bison changed their game plan in the fourth quarter, switching from their usual up-tempo style to keep-away.
The methodical style payed off as Balko scored only five points in the period but managed to hold on for a 42-36 win in the early semifinal of the Texhoma Tournament.
The Lady Dogs, who had been on Balko’s heels since the end of the first quarter, took the lead late in the third as senior post Shayla Mathis converted a three-point play to go up 33-31.
Things quickly fell apart, however, and Hooker would only score three points for the final 10 minutes of the game.
The Lady Bison dominated Hooker at the free throw line hitting 71.4 percent (10-of-14) compared to the Lady Dogs’ 50 percent (11-of-22).
Sophomore guard Jaylee Mays led Balko with 24 points, while freshman Maidson Dearmin had eight. Senior Fred Santos had six and sophomore Justin Mays and freshman Fred Santos had two points apiece.
Sophomore Jade Cathcart led Hooker with 10 points, while Mathis had seven points and 14 rebounds. Junior Brittney Bergner had five points, sophomore Jayme Walton had four and senior Crystal Ferguson had three.
