Area basketball teams get one more crack at regular season tournament action today before heading for the home stretch over the next few weeks.
The Liberal Redskins are headed to Colby for the annual Orange and Black Classic. The Lady Redskins (5-4) will take on host Colby at 6:30 p.m. in the Colby Community Building. The Lady Skins have won two straight.
The Redskin boys are also 5-4 on the season after suffering a loss to Class 3A No. 3 Scott City. Liberal will take on Palmer Ridge High School out of Monument, Colo., at 8:30 p.m. at Colby High School.
Southwestern Heights resumes play today in the Hi Plains League Tournament, where the No. 4-ranked Lady Mustangs (8-1) will battle Elkhart in the semifinals at 6 p.m. The game will take place at Garden City Community College.
The game will be special for Southwestern Heights head coach Barry Mellen — Elkhart coach Lori Wright played for Mellen when she was in high school.
The winner will advance to the league tournament championship to face either Cimarron or Leoti, who play in the other semifinal tonight at 7:30.
The Mustang boys (3-7) will take on Elkhart in the consolation semifinals at 6 p.m.
In the Oklahoma Panhandle, Tyrone, Turpin and Hooker are heading to the Texhoma tournament today, which is a who’s who of Panhandle small school basketball.
The Tyrone Bobcat boys are perhaps the class of the tournament this year, coming in with an 11-1 overall record after a 62-37 win at Keyes, Okla. on Tuesday. Tyrone shot just 27 percent from the field in the win.
Austin Olivas had 16 points, Tyler Lai 14 and Adan Lomas 13.
Tyrone opens against Goodwell, a team the Bobcats have beaten twice by an average of 15 points.
“Goodwell will be a test, they get better everytime we play them,” Tyrone coach Clay Witt said. “We know good and well that Goodwell’s going to give us a tough challenge.”
Hooker (9-5) opens at 2:45 today against Boise City and Turpin was playing Balko at 12:15 this afternoon. Texhoma (7-7) battles Hardesty tonight at 7:45.
On the girls side, Turpin (2-13) opened at 11 a.m. this morning against No. 11 Balko (12-2) and Hooker (6-8) takes on Tyrone (6-6) at 4 p.m.
The Beaver Dusters and Lady Dusters are done with tournament season and have the day off before hosting Rolla on Friday for Homecoming. The Lady Dusters (16-2) are ranked No. 9 in the Class A poll. The Duster boys are 12-6 overall.
The Forgan girls (10-5) are traveling to the Buffalo Tournament where they will take on Keyes today.
“There’s several good teams in that tournament,” Forgan coach Brett Trippet said. “I don’t know how it’s going to pan out, but we’re playing good basketball and we’re optimistic that maybe we’ll continue doing that.”
The Forgan boys JV will compete in Buffalo since the varsity has already played in three tournaments.
