Saints grab OT thriller over Pratt PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 17 January 2011 12:37

A year ago, the Pratt Beavers visited the Greenhouse and came away with what was considered an upset win over the Saints.
History almost repeated itself Saturday night.
Pratt rallied from five points down with 1:39 to go and forced the Saints into overtime. But Seward pulled ahead in the extra frame and held on to win 69-66.
Neither team could grab a foot hold during the game, as the Saints played a little sluggish and had a hard time matching Pratt’s intensity.
Seward (15-3 overall, 3-1 Jayhawk West) seemed to get in the groove near the end of the first half, ending on an 8-0 run after Pratt (9-8, 0-3) had taken a 23-22 lead on a steal and basket by Terry Taylor.
A free throw by Rafriel Guthrie tied it, then a steal by Jeremy Jones led to a basket by Marky Nolen for a 25-23 lead. Phil Hawkins increased it to a 4-point advantage before single free throws by Nolen and Hawkins pushed it to seven at the half.
But Pratt would surge back into the game, opening the second half on a 17-9 run to take the lead 40-39 with an emphatic dunk by Jon Cathey-Macklin.
The teams exchanged leads until a tip-in by Nolen put Seward up 46-45 and a steal and hoop by Jones put the Saints up by three.
After a dunk by Daveon Boardingham and a free throw by Guthrie gave the Saints a 54-49 lead, Pratt rallied to take a 55-54 lead with 15 seconds left.
Jones hit the first of two free throws to tie it with 12.9 seconds left, but couldn’t convert the second, sending it to overtime.
The Saints never trailed in the extra frame, as Jones, Boardingham and Nolen led the Saints charge.
Jones led SCCC with 22 points, Nolen had 11 points and 11 boards, Markee Mazyck added 10, Boardingham 9, Guthrie 5, Irvin Hollinger and Hawkins 4 and Marquez Patterson 2.
