HUTCHINSON — The Seward County Saints and Lady Saints opened Jayhawk West conference play Wednesday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena with a pair of losses to the highly-ranked Hutchinson Blue Dragons.
The Saints fell to 12-3 with an 80-75 loss to a Hutchinson squad that came in ranked No. 1 in the nation. Hutch improved to 15-0.
Seward got off to an uncharacteristically sluggish start, trailing 38-28 at halftime. The woes continued in the second half as the Saints had trouble with execution.
Jeremy Jones led the Saints with 26 points and Rafriel Guthrie added 12. Marky Nolen scored nine points and grabbed a team-leading eight rebounds.
Seward shot 37 percent in the first half and improved that number to 46 percent in the second half.
The Saints will play host to Barton on Saturday night. Seward and Barton go into Saturday’s game with identical 12-3 overall records and 0-1 conference marks.
•The Lady Saints also got off to a sluggish start on Wednesday, trailing No. 19 Hutchinson 41-31 at halftime en route to a 73-56 loss. The setback give the Lady Saints a 10-5 overall record.
Ashlynn Knoll led the ladies with 14 points and seven boards, while Mariah Lee added 10 points for Seward County. Autumn Miller scored nine and Hannah Rotolo eight points.
The Lady Saints turned the ball over 32 times and shot a dismal 29 percent in the second half after a 61 percent shooting percentage in the first half.
Seward takes on Barton Saturday in the Green House. Barton is 7-7 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
