When a task is somewhat simple, an old saying goes that it’s “as easy as one, two, three,” but Wednesday, Liberal’s Justin Varnes made winning as easy as “three, four, five.”
Three days before Christmas, after drawing the fourth envelope, Varnes took home five grand in cash from the Leader & Times in the paper’s Christmas cash giveaway.
The news came as somewhat of a surprise to Varnes.
“Complete shock, but it felt very good,” he said.
As for what he will do with the money, Varnes said he does have plans for it.
“I’d love to have an iPad, but probably paying off some student loans and save a lot of it,” he said. “I graduated from Kansas State University. It’s a pretty hefty payment.”
Some would say $5,000 would come in handy this time of year, but Varnes said presents are not in the picture for his cash winnings.
“I’ve actually got all my Christmas shopping done, but I think my family and I will have to go out to eat to celebrate,” he said.
