TURPIN, Okla. — If anybody thought there would be any sort of drop off for the Turpin Cardinals basketball team, they were shown differently, Monday night. After a slow start, the Cardinals steadily regained form and knocked off Booker, Texas 60-42.
Matt Mendoza and Allen Keene combined for 34 of Turpin’s 60 points as the Cardinals (1-0) trailed only once in posting their first win of the season.
Ahead just 4-3 early, Francisco Regalado nailed a 3-pointer to make it 7-3, but Booker’s Manny Ramirez answered with a trey of his own. Not to be out-done, Mendoza nailed a 3-pointer to make it 10-6, and Keene added a layup for a 12-6 advantage.
After Mendoza increased Turpin’s lead to 14-9, the Kiowas went on a 7-0 run to take their first and only lead of the game at the 4:03 mark of the second quarter.
Regalado quickly answered for the Cardinals with two swift baskets for an 18-16 lead, the second after a steal, and Turpin led 26-20 at the half.
After Booker cut it to within three to open the third, Turpin used its superior ball movement and strong play by Keene in the paint to spark an 11-2 run and increase its lead to 43-35 entering the final frame.
Turpin out-scored Booker 17-7 in the fourth.
Mendoza led Turpin with 18, Keene 16 in the paint, Regalado nine, Bradley Kinser seven, Edgar Anchondo four and Freddie Baeza two.
Turpin travels to Keyes on Nov. 30.
