The Lady Redskins split a double header with Hugoton Thursday, dropping the opener 3-1 but bouncing back in Game 2 for an 8-2 win.

The Lady Redskins struggled against Lady Eagle pitcher Meaghan McClure in Game 1, only scoring one run on an RBI single by Ren Watt that allowed Whitney Hay to cross the plate.

Kaeleah Chaloupek also had a strong outing in the circle for the Lady Redskins, but Hugoton used aggressive base-running and two bloop singles in the third inning to score three runs, taking advantage of two stolen bases.

The Lady Redskins had two runners in scoring position in the seventh inning, but Liberal couldn’t get a key hit in two tries, and the Lady Redskins suffered their first loss of the season 3-1.

Nine Lady Redskins struck out in the loss.

But in Game 2, the Redskins were more aggressive at the plate against McClure, starting with lead-off batter Alexia Torres who dropped a single into right field and later scored when Eyleen Vasquez doubled to right.

Mikayla Zapien hit a double in the first inning, and the Lady Redskins started with a 2-0 lead.

Chaloupek only allowed one hit in the first two innings, and the Lady Redskins added two more runs in the second with a one-out single from Mimi Gomez followed by a two-out double from Torres and an error by the Lady Eagles allowed Torres to move to third while Gomez scored. Torres scored on a single by Chaloupek, and the Lady Redskins had a 4-0 lead.

Hugoton pushed a run across in the third after a lead-off double by Montana Holt and a fielding error later allowed Holt to score.

Chaloupek never faced more than four batters for the next three innings, but the Lady Redskins couldn’t push any runners across the plate, either. Liberal had a chance in the fourth after loading the bases with only two outs, but a shallow pop fly and a groundout ended the threat.

But the Lady Redskins were able to chase Meaghan McClure out of the circle in the sixth after hits by Madison Tilford and Torres, and they later scored off hits by Chaloupek and Vasquez.

Hugoton traded places with Meaghan McClure at pitcher and Milly McClure at catcher, and Whitney Hay was able two hit a double to score Chaloupek and Vasquez, and the Lady Redskins had an 8-1 lead.

Liberal gave away a run in the bottom of the seventh with two errors and a single, but Chaloupek was able to force a tapper back to the circle and tossed the ball to first for the final out and an 8-2 win.

Torres had a strong day at the plate, scoring three runs in Game 2 with two singles, a double and a walk.

Vasquez had two doubles, and Zapien had a double and a walk.

Gomez and Tilford each had a hit in the win.

The split pushed Liberal’s record to 5-1, one of the best starts in recent years.

The Lady Redskins will travel to Scott City Friday, April 6 for a double header against the Lady Beavers, and they will return to Liberal Tuesday, April 10 for the Western Athletic Conference opener against Great Bend.
