In a matchup between two of the better middle school girls basketball programs, the Garden City Abe Hubert 7th graders took a 3-game sweep of Liberal West, but not without a fight. The night began with the West C-team falling in a 12-8 nail-biter, followed by the B-team falling 16-15. The Abe Hubert A-team jumped to a big 23-7 lead at halftime and withstood a furious West rally before posting a 37-23 win over the Lady Warriors.

The Lady Warriors scored the game’s initial basket — a shot by Brittany Granger — and trailed just 7-5 at the end of the first.
West’s Megan Larkin tied it at 7 early in the second period. But the Lady Hawks went on a 16-0 run the remainder of the second quarter to take a 23-7 halftime lead, and led 31-11 at the end of the third.
A stifling defense, especially by Jayme Flowers, gave the Lady Hawks the advantage.
But with Flowers in foul trouble, West took control in the fourth, out-scoring Abe Hubert 12-6. Larkin led West with eight points, Cennedee Burns added six, Granger five, Sidney Shiflet and Jessica Cisneros two.

The Lady Warriors trailed most of the game, but regained the lead at 13-12 ending the third period. West increased that lead to 15-12 before the Lady Hawks scored the final two baskets of the game to hang on for the win.
Down 12-7 early in the third, West went on a 6-0 run to end the period. Sarah Arriaga and Essence Goodrum sparked the run.
Mitzi Mesinas scored to cut it to 15-14 and Alexis Peterson hit the game-winner for the Lady Hawks.
Goodrum led West with seven points.

Sarahi Aguilera scored the only basket of the first period for West and Kayla Tran the only hoop of the second half for the Lady Warriors.
