SALINA — The third quarter has not been good for the Redskins this season, and Saturday’s fifth-place game at the Salina Invitational Tournament was no exception. After building an eight-point halftime lead, the Redskins faltered in the third quarter, and Abilene took advantage, erasing the deficit and taking a double digit lead.

Liberal never recovered and lost 65-48.

“We did some positive things,” Liberal coach Ryan Petty said of his team’s performance in Salina. “We led in every single game, we led at half in every single game. We led more in the last three games than the entire season. We turned it over less. But we were hurt on the boards, especially late against Abilene. We had a hard time hitting shots in the Buhler game and Abilene game and keeping the other team off the offensive glass as well.”

Facing the zone in the second half was no surprise, but the Redskins struggled to find shots.

“We told the guys at half that they would go zone,” Petty said. “We haven’t seen much zone this year. It is frustrating. We thought we turned the corner offensively against man, but the second half, we struggled against the zone. We have to do a better job coming out at halftime.”

That, and rebounding.

“Our turnovers have gone drown dramatically with (Kace Vongoskda) at the point,” Petty said. “He creates a lot of open shots for other guys. We will be able to score a lot easier. We will have to defend, our bigs will have to play a lot bigger, and we will have to secure rebounds if we are going to win ball games.”
