Game by game, the Liberal Redskins have shown steady improvement throughout the season, and Thursday’s game against Buhler was another step forward.

Unfortunately, the Redskins are still struggling to convert improvement into victories, and despite having a halftime lead, the Redskins faltered in the second half in the first round of the Salina Invitational Tournament, losing to the Buhler Crusaders 48-37.

It was another tough stretch in the third quarter, a pattern that has plagued the Redskins, that allowed Buhler to come back from a 19-16 halftime deficit and take a lead.

Liberal’s struggles continued early in the fourth while Buhler built a 39-30 advantage.

But the Redskins battled back, cutting the lead to only three after a 6-0 run.

But the Redskins couldn’t get over the top, and Buhler pulled away late for the 48-37 win.

Kace Vongsokda played in his first game as a Redskin, and the senior transfer form Wichita North put up 17 points to lead Liberal. Cameron Riley added eight.

The sixth-seeded Liberal Redskins will face seventh-seeded Concordia on the consolation side of the bracket. Concordia pushed No. 2 seed Salina Central before falling 49-47.

Liberal will tip off at 8:15 tonight at Salina Central.
