The accolades keep coming in for Liberal boys soccer coach Lori Navarro. Just days after guiding her team to its eighth final four appearance in nine years and its third runner-up finish in school history, Navarro was named one of three Kansas state coaches of the year.
Navarro is the small class coach of the year, while Overland Park Blue Valley West’s Alex Aiman was large class coach of the year and Tom Nykamp of Wichita Trinity was named private school coach of the year.
“I can’t lie, it’s a great feeling overall to get such a prestigious honor,” Navarro said. “It’s overwhelming, it’s a great feeling to know that I have the respect and that they’re willing to nominate me for such a great honor.”
Navarro has been the only boys soccer coach Liberal has had, and has built the program into one of the state’s powerhouses. She’s also the only female coach of a boys team in Kansas.
She received the same honor in 2006. And she said she wouldn’t have received the coach of the year honor if it weren’t for her team.
“I think we’ve made great strides as a team,” Navarro said. “We set out every goal possible that we could reach and it was amazing how we took care of one goal at a time.
“Everything about the season was just phenomenal. These boys deserved every bit of recognition.  I wouldn’t get my recognition if it wasn’t for my boys, who make it all possible for me. I’m very grateful to them for doing what they did and for believing in me as a coach. Giving me an award like this comes from them.”
