BALKO, Okla.— It is not unusual to see a team start slow after the Christmas break, and that kind of night cost the Turpin Cardinals in a 39-36 loss to the Balko Bison.

alt“Can’t play much worse,” Cardinals coach Gary Wallace said. “We stood around, took bad shots and didn’t share the basketball. Our deal is pressure zone and we just stood there with them. We waited for them to move and tried to play off of that, which doesn’t work. They got the shots they wanted. We can’t beat a lot of teams playing like that.”

In a game that did not feature much offense from either team, Balko got just enough to hold off Turpin for the win.

A layup at the buzzer to end the third quarter by Turpin’s Trent Weber tied the game at 27 heading into the final stanza. But Balko outscored Turpin 9-4 to take a 38-31 lead with 1:12 left to play. A three by Carson Buller with 17 seconds left cut the lead to three (39-36) to give them a chance. Balko’s Logan Cowan missed the front end of a one-and-one to give Turpin a final chance to tie, but Cian Cullum missed a pair of three-point attempts, and Balko held on for the win.

In the first half, the lead teetered back and forth between the two team. The two teams were tied at 6 after a quarter of play, then exchanged lead changes four times in the second with Balko taking an 18-14 lead to the half.

Turpin regained the lead early in the third, but back to back threes by Chandler Dearmin and Cohl Cowan put Balko back up.

Balko’s Tyler Mahaffey scored 15; Chandler Dearmin scored 13. Trent Weber scored 10 for Turpin; Jesus Espino added 9, Cian Cullum 8.

Turpin (4-5) will take on Waynoka, Thursday in the opening round of the Oil Center Classic in Woodward.
