BALKO, Okla.— Turpin’s terrible start coupled with a hot shooting start by Balko doomed the Lady Cardinals before a second-half comeback fell short as the Balko Lady Bison defeated the Turpin Lady Cardinals, 51-43.

alt“We started out in our press and that got us down 11-1,” Lady Cardinals coach Braydon Robinson said. “Once we got out of that we actually outscored them the rest of the game.”

Balko’s Taylor Cardwell scored nine straight off of three treys in the latter half of the first quarter, part of a five first-quarter threes by the Lady Bison that helped them build a 21-4 lead just seconds into the second quarter.

Turpin righted the ship defensively, but continued to struggle with their shot. The Lady Cardinals made just three field goals in the first half and trailed 26-10 at the half.

A free throw by Parker McIntyre with 5:46 left in the third gave the Lady Bison what appeared to be a comfortable 31-13 lead. But things started to click for the Lady Cardinals on both ends with a 9-0 run that cut the lead to single digits (31-22) for the first times since early in the first quarter.

“We moved the ball much better in the second half, got better looks at the basket,” Robinson said. “It’s the difference between running our offense and doing your own thing.”

Turpin trailed 35-22 heading into the fourth. Balko still led by 14 (44-30) with 4:30 left to play. But then Saylor Parker hit a three and Micaela Young hit a pair to cut the lead to single digits. Parker’s layup with 20 seconds cut the lead to five (48-43).

But that would be as close at Turpin would get, falling to Balko by eight.

Balko’s Taylor Cardwell led the Lady Bison with 16 points; Parker McIntyre added 13.

Micaela Young led all scorers with 22. Saylor Parker added 14.

Turpin (3-6) and Balko (5-5) will face off again Thursday in the opening round of the Oil Center Classic in Woodward.
