Some local nursing homes and non-profits got an early Christmas gift this week from the Liberal branch of Golden Plains Credit Union (GPCU).

Among the recipients of presents were Liberal Good Samaritan, Wheatridge Park Care Center, Brookdale Liberal Springs, the Liberal Senior Center, Stepping Stone Shelter, Liberal Area Rape Crisis/Domestic Violence Services, Southwest Miracles and Bright Futures.

Stepping Stone, LARC/DVS, Southwest Miracles and Bright Futures also received donation checks from GPCU.

Officials with the credit union delivered gifts Thursday to Stepping Stone and Good Sam, and Farron Lynch, vice president of branch services at GPCU’s Liberal branch, said the gifts were part of the company’s annual Christmas donations.

“We look around Liberal and find charities that we see are needy,” he said. “We choose them. We have gifts that we donate and money as well.”

Lynch said who is chosen for the gifts is primarily up to GPCU workers themselves.

“We ask the employees about any charities they may know of or are aware of and get feedback,” he said. “The employees get to choose. The reason for that is all the money that is donated comes from employee contributions. It’s all from the Liberal branch here and the employees that work there, and we get to choose as a group what charities we’d like to donate to.”

With a mission of people helping people, Lynch said credit unions such as GPCU stress the importance of giving back to the community as well as providing banking needs.

“We enjoy getting to do this,” he said. “Employees enjoy being able to donate money and use it for good causes as well.”

Lynch said the gifts and donations were naturally welcomed by all of their recipients.

“We’ve had great feedback from the other charities that we’ve gone to, very appreciative,” he said. “When we tell them who we’re donating to, it’s interesting to hear how they work together too, the different charities. Very cool how it’s connected in the community. It’s great to see them working together towards a similar goal.”
