A Perryton, Texas, woman died after the car she was riding in collided with a semi early Friday morning in Texas County, Okla.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported the accident occurred at 2:30 a.m. Friday on U.S. Highway 83 about eight and a half miles south of Turpin, Okla.
A 2005 Chrysler, driven by Maclovia Rashell Mena, 20, of Perryton was southbound on U.S. 83, while a 2003 Kenworth was northbound on the same highway. The semi was driven by 33-year-old Gurwant Dhaliwal of Brampton, Ontario, Canada.
The OHP said the Chrysler went left of center, took evasive action to the left and struck the Kenworth on its passenger side rear duals.
Dhaliwal was not injured in the accident. However, a passenger in Mena’s vehicle, 21-year-old Jeanette Garcia of Perryton was pronounced dead at the scene from head and neck injuries. The OHP reported Garcia was pinned in the vehicle for a little more than an hour.
Mena, herself, was taken to Southwest Medical Center in Liberal, where she was admitted with head, shoulder and leg injuries. She was later airlifted to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, where she is listed in serious condition.
Seat belts were equipped in both vehicles. They were in use in the Kenworth, but not the Chrysler, according to the OHP.
