The West Middle School Warriors 8th grade girls basketball team picked up a sweep of rival South on Thursday evening at West, while over at South, the West A and B team got big wins, and the South C team picked up a 3-point victory.
West 8th A ...................... 25 South 8th A ...................... 7 Kelly Ramirez drained nine points as the West Warrior 8th grade A-team spotted South a 4-2 first quarter lead, but used a 12-0 second quarter run to post a 25-7 win at West Middle School. “We struggled early to get our offense going,” said coach Pat Knott. “Yvette Vasquez sparked the run with six points.” West was 1-for-4 from the free throw line in the third quarter, but maintained a 17-6 lead after three frames. The Lady Warriors out-scored South 8-1 in the final quarter. Vasquez ended up with six points for the game and Megan Besecker and Critine Garcia each scored four points for West.
West 8th B ...................... 26 South 8th B ...................... 4 The Lady Warrior B-team took control of the game early thanks to strong post play by Hannah Roberts. Roberts drained four points in the first and four more in the second as West went ahead 12-2 at halftime. Vasquez scored six points to increase West’s advantage as the Lady Warriors improved to 2-0. Roberts scored 10 for the game, Keynitra Houston added six points, Vasquez six and Diamond Ward two.
West 7th A ...................... 30 South 7th A ..................... 18 The Lady Warrior 7th grade A-team jumped to a 10-4 first quarter lead and never looked back. Megan Larkin scored eight of her game-high 18 points for West in the first quarter alone. Caro Limon led South with six points.
West 7th B ...................... 30 South 7th B ...................... 9 The Lady Warrior 7th B-team led just 8-5 at the end of the first period on Thursday night, then cruised from there for a 30-9 win over South in the South Middle School gym. Sarah Arriga led West with 10 points and Zarya King added eight as West went on an 8-0 run in the second period. Valeria Ortiz led South with five points and Victoria Rios added the other four.
South 7th C ...................... 18 West 7th C ...................... 15 The South Lady Apaches picked up an exciting 18-15 win over West on Thursday afternoon, breaking an 8-all tie with an 8-0 run in the third quarter to take a 16-8 lead. But West roared back with a 7-2 run in the fourth and final frame, but the Lady Apaches were able to hang on for the win. Tiara Wiltshire and Milagros Diaz led South with six points each. South’s schedule shows the Lady Apache 7th graders hosting Dodge City with the 8th graders traveling to Dodge on Monday. The Guymon Central Junior High Lady Tiger 7th graders come to South on Tuesday, while the 8th graders visit the Oklahoma Panhandle that day. West’s schedule shows the Lady Warrior 7th graders hosting Kenneth Henderson on Tuesday, with the 8th graders traveling to Garden City, and the 8th graders hosting Ulysses Kepley next Thursday and the 7th grade Lady Warriors traveling to Ulysses that day.
