The first few minutes of the basketball season were a little shaky, but once the Lady Redskins hit their stride, they ran away from the Holcomb Lady Longhorns for a 55-40 win.

Midway through the first quarter, the Lady Redskins and Lady Longhorns were struggling to execute on offense, but Machia Mullens started to heat up in the lane, and the Lady Redskins made three of four free throw attempts early to get the offense moving.

Holcomb looked outside to get some scoring, and the Lady Longhorns connected on two three pointers in the first quarter, and by the end of the period the Lady Redskins had a 12-10 lead.

The Lady Redskins also had some success from the outside, Alli Lucero connected on two first-half three pointers, and Whitney Hay also hit a three pointer before halftime.

Holcomb added another three as well.

But with the Lady Redskins neutralizing the outside game, the battle moved to the lane, and Liberal started to pull away in the second quarter.

Horyna added two baskets in the period to go along with a basket and a three from Lucero, and freshman Reece Hay provided a basket and a free throw.

After scoring six points in the first quarter, Mullens added six more in the second to reach double digits before halftime.

With Whitney Hay’s three, the Lady Redskins added 21 second quarter points while holding Holcomb to 13 in the period, and Liberal had a 33-23 halftime lead.

The Lady Redskin defense continued to dominate in the second half, and head coach Carter Krueger made some halftime adjustments that made scoring even more difficult for the Lady Longhorns.

The Lady Redskin defense only allowed six points in the third quarter.

Horyna scored six by herself in the third quarter, and those points were added to two by Lucero, two from Audrey Gilmore, a pair of free throws from Mullens and a free throw from Kim Alarcon, and the Lady Redskins added 13 more points in the period to extend the lead to 46-29.

Carter played 12 Lady Redskins in the game, bringing seven off the bench throughout the night and resting his starters for most of the fourth quarter.

Still, Liberal was able to maintain the large lead and coast to the 55-40 win.

Liberal won the free throw battle, making 18 of 25 attempts for 72 percent while the Lady Longhorns made 12 of 23 attempts for 52 percent.

Mullens led all scorers with 16 points. Horyna added 14 points, and Lucero had 12.

The Lady Redskins will try to move to 2-0 Tuesday when they travel to Guymon for their second straight road game to start the season.
