Daily Leader staff report

DODGE CITY — The Liberal West 8th grade girls basketball team traveled to Dodge City on Monday, splitting their first games of the season. The 8th B-team shut Dodge City out, 21-0, while the A-team fell 26-20.
In the B-team game, the Lady Warrior defense was un-relenting.
“The defense was not going to let Dodge City score,” said coach Pat Knott.
West scored four in the first and two in the second for a 6-0 halftime lead, then turned up the heat with a 15-0 run in the second half.
Yvette Vasquez scored five points to lead West, while Kattie Silva, Tylor Young and Hannah Roberts each scoring four points.
The 8th A-team led 6-2 after the first period of play, but Dodge City went on a 16-2 run to take an 18-8 lead at halftime. West out-scored Dodge 12-8 in the second half, but the damage had already been done.
“We controlled the first quarter, getting a few fast-break points along with some timely offensive set plays,” Knott said. “But defensive breakdowns and some costly turnovers gave Dodge the added advantage.
“We made a few adjustments and held Dodge City to only eight second half points.”
Lekky Ramirez led the Warriors with eight points and Rosio Zapien added four.
“The girls have to come together and play hard on both ends of the floor to give us a chance to win every night,” Knott said.
