Death ruled a suicide

A ruling of suicide has been made in the case of a dead body found in 2016 behind the VFW west of Liberal.

“July 6, 2016, the Seward County Sheriff’s office responded to 3971 Muse Road, Liberal, Kansas for a deceased person hanging in the trees behind the VFW,” said a press release from Seward County Undersheriff Gene Ward. “The deceased person’s identity was unknown at the time of the call.”

Ward said the sheriff’s office received information on the possible identity of the deceased person, and with assistance of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation agent assigned to Seward County and the KBI forensic laboratory, the possible identity was compared to the deceased person and was identified through DNA and dental records to be the deceased person.

“The family has been notified, and at the family’s request, the name of the deceased person is being withheld,” Ward said. “The case has been ruled a suicide, and the case has been closed.”
