CIMARRON — Plagued by penalties and turnovers, the Southwestern Heights Mustangs were defeated by the Cimarron Bluejays in a shutout during Friday night’s football game in Cimarron, 41-0.
Cimarron’s first possession was squelched by the Mustangs who forced a punt, but the first possession for the Mustangs resulted in their first turnover of the evening. As a result of the interception, the Bluejays ran in their first touchdown at 8:44 in the first. With the two-point conversion, Cimarron led 8-0.
The Mustangs seemed in control with their consistent movement of the ball down field. Sophomore quarterback Ben Johnsrud broke away for a huge gain setting the Mustangs up with a first down at the Cimarron 20 yard line. Fate would intervene and the next play was fumbled by the Mustangs for a Bluejay recovery.
Taking it into the second quarter, the Bluejays swept the ball to a first and goal at the 3 yard line. At 11:34 in the second, Cimarron rushed their second touchdown. With an unsuccessful conversion attempt, the Bluejays increased their lead 14-0.
With only nine seconds run off the clock at 11:25, the Mustangs fumbled the ball again with a Bluejay defensive recovery. Mustang junior Junior Herrera stepped up to the challenge on defense and intercepted the ball at the 8 yard line at 11:19 in the second. Unable to capitalize, the Mustangs turned the ball over on downs at their own 46-yard line.
After exchanging unsuccessful possessions, the next score did not take place until 2:00 in the second. Needing to hold on an important 4th and 4, the Mustang defense was pulled offsides; the Bluejays capitalized with a touchdown. With the conversion, the halftime score was 22-0.
In the third, the Mustang offense could not put together a successful drive. Seeking vengeance from last year’s loss, the Bluejays took in two more touchdowns ending the third quarter 34-0.
The only touchdown in the fourth quarter came from the Bluejays score at 6:45. With a total closeout, Cimarron ended the game 41-0.
With senior recognition in hand, the Southwestern Heights Mustangs will host the Lakin Broncs next Thursday night.
