ULYSSES – Carlos (Charlie) O. Mendoza, 80, died Tuesday, June 13, 2017, in Wichita following a brief illness.  

He was born July 19, 1936 to Blas and Anita (Ornelas) Mendoza in Vernon, Texas. 

Charlie spent his early adult life in Grand Island, Nebraska, working at Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant.  

He was known for being a very pleasant and good-natured man who did not know a stranger, and who had a passion for playing the guitar and listening to his idol, Elvis Presley.  

He was an avid car enthusiast. 

Survivors include daughter, Carol Jean Mendoza, Bayard, Neb.; grandchildren, John and Amanda, Bayard, Neb.; great-grandchildren, Gabriel and Misty, Bayard, Neb.; siblings: Blas Mendoza and wife, Nancy, Kearney, Neb., Mary Pena, Ulysses, Delia Quintero, Vernon, Texas, Elvira (Vera) Tristan and husband, Sergio, Sun City, Ariz., Robert Mendoza and wife, Charlene, Gering, Neb., and Mary Helen Davila and husband, Armando, Lubbock, Texas; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Johnny Lee; and siblings: Bentura (Ben) Mendoza, Frank Mendoza, Lupe Mendoza and Amalia (Molly) Magdaleno.

• Vigil and rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Monday, June 19, 2017 at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses.

Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses with Reverend Peter Fernandez presiding. 

Burial will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery.  

Memorials are suggested to Mosaic or Charlie Mendoza Memorial Fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS  67880.
