ELKHART – Ernest L. “Runt” Williams, 96, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2010, at Morton County Hospital in Elkhart.

He was born April 15, 1914, to Charles Perry and Pearl Agnes (Crawford) Williams in Rolla.

He married Jesse Jean Steele Feb. 3, 1943, in Boise City, Okla. She preceded him in death.

He graduated from Rolla High School then served in the United States Army during World War II.

He was the former owner/operator of Williams & Sons Hardware in Elkhart until he sold it. He then moved to Rolla to manage the Rolla Co-op and later worked for Elkhart Co-op until his retirement.

He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, VFW Post No. 3162, Lions Club, Eastern Star, Masonic Lodge, Point Rock Trail Riders, Levi & Lace Square Dance Club, Elkhart United Methodist Church and United Methodist Men. He helped organize the beginning of little league baseball in Elkhart.

He enjoyed golfing, spending time with his grandchildren, RVing with his family, his involvement with the VFW and square dancing with his wife, Jean.

Survivors include three sons, Craig Williams, Hutchinson, Steven Williams and wife, Dawn, Elkhart, and Rodney Williams and wife, Tana, Clovis, N.M.; one daughter, Paula Petersen and husband, Roy, Durango, Colo.; two sisters, Clara Tarrant and Genevieve Link, both of Rolla; eight grandchildren, Carrick Williams, Caisha Hinnen, Brandon Williams, Kristi Sell, Bobbi Bates, Jenni Gee, Curtis Williams, Jessi Petersen and Randy Petersen; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Lyle “Cop” Williams and Clairmont Williams, sister, Opal Bullard, and special nephew, Sammie Gamble.

o Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Elkhart United Methodist Church with Pastor Bruce Ferguson presiding.

Burial will be at the Elkhart Cemetery with military rites conducted by VFW Post No. 3162.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home in Elkhart.
