Thomas E. “Tom” Shumate, 49, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, at Baptist
St. Anthony’s Health System in Amarillo.

He was born March 6, 1959, to Bennie and Willa Jean (Smith) Shumate
in Lamar, Colo.

He married Kristen Marie Lacy June 13, 1963, in Springfield, Colo.
She survives.

He was a 1977 graduate of Lamar High School and was an Eagle Scout.

He earned a bachelors degree in psychology in 1982 at Sioux Falls
College in Sioux Falls, S.D. and a masters in gerontology from
Wichita State University in 1988.

He served in the U.S. Army from Feb. 1982 to Feb. 1987 earning the
rank of sergeant.

He was a nursing home administrator working for the Good Samaritan
Society in Farwell, Texas, Gifford, Ill., Liberal and St. James.,
Minn. and was transitioning to work as nursing home administrator at
Moore County Hospital District in Dumas, Texas.

He was baptized in the First Baptist Church in Lamar. He was a
current member of Lakeview Gospel Church in Mountain Lake, Minn. and
a former member of First Baptist Church in Liberal where he served as
a Deacon and Awana Commander and had been in the Rotary Club.

Other survivors include his parents; two sons, Daniel Shumate,
Nashville, Tenn. and Andrew Shumate, Amarillo, Texas; one daughter,
Verva Jean Shumate, St. James; and one brother, Col. Jim Shumate and
wife, Lori, Colorado Springs.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Cassandra Shumate;
and grandparents Ray and Georgia Smith and John Bryan Shumate and
Versa McGonagill.

o Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist
Church in Liberal with the Revs. Merwin Dick and David Bagwell

Graveside service will be 3:30 p.m., Wednesday at Springfield Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday at
Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home and 6 to 8 p.m. Tueday at the First
Baptist Church.

Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church for the Shumate
family and may be sent in care of Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home, 1212
W. 2nd, Liberal, KS 67901.
