Daily Leader staff report
Tom Schroeder resigned this morning as head coach of the Liberal Redskins.
His resignation was effective immediately.
The announcement was made by Liberal High School athletic director Scott Hinkle.
No plans for filling the vacancy have been released.
Schroeder was hired in 2006 to replace Steve Warner who resigned to coach Buhler.
Schroeder was the first coach since Gary Cornelsen to coach for more than two years.
Schroeder guided the team to a 2-8 record his first season in 2006.
The two wins were over district opponents, and the Redskins qualified for the playoffs.
In 2007, the Redskins improved to a 4-6 record, knocking off Hays, Garden City, Winfield and Ark City.
This season the Redskins went 5-5 with wins over Guymon , Hays,
Dodge City, Valley Center and Wichita West.
Liberal was considered the team of the ’90s with seven consecutive state championship appearances from 1991 to 1997 under Cornelsen.
Cornelsen continued to coach the Redskins until he resigned in 2001 and became Liberal’s athletic director.
Rich Anderson was hired and coached for one year before resigning after illegally using equipment during a camp.
Cornelsen stepped back in for a one year coaching stint before Warner was hired in 2004.
Schroeder then took the helm until this morning.
