After Liberal used a strong wind to earn a shutout victory over Great Bend in the home opener earlier this week, a fairly calm, breezy day Thursday provided no advantage in the second Western Athletic Conference game of the year.
But it wasn’t the wind, but the inability of the Lady Redskins to move the ball beyond the Hays defense that led to a 3-0 loss.
The Lady Redskins used the sidelines to advance the ball up the field, but the Lady Indian defense was able to force turnovers and move the ball back to midfield.
The Lady Redskins struggled to get the ball in the Lady Indian box, something Hays was did when they had the ball.
Hays had a 1-0 lead at half, and the Lady Redskins showed some aggressiveness to start the second half.
Katie Burnett looked to get loose, but she was almost always accompanied by two Hays defenders.
The breakdown came when Hays had the ball from the wing and was able to center the ball to open Lady Indians in front of the goal.
Lady Redskins goalkeeper Cynthia Nguyen had little chance at stopping the scoring attempts from point blank range.
The loss dropped the Lady Redskins to 2-3 on the season.
Liberal will continue WAC play Tuesday when they travel to Garden City to face the Lady Buffaloes. Games begin at 4 p.m.
