By Starley Craig of Liberal

Why does Liberal present such a run-down, uncared for image and expect businesses and individuals to want to move here?

There are weeds three-feet high in the gutters. No one cuts them down or even enforces the codes we already have.

Two blocks from our home is a place that used to be an attractive home, but now it has the driveway, walk and porch torn up in big huge piles, covered up with tall weeds.

I know we have codes on the books that restrict how long a citizen can take to repair or add on to a home.

Are they being enforced?

Dead trees are everywhere. Even the city has lost four beautiful trees in the back parking lot because they were never watered. Drive any through street from north to south, look at the ratty businesses, houses that should have been condemned ages ago and say you would want to live here or start a business here.

Drive down Second Street. Want to but a house there? When people retire, they move from here to another town.

We cannot afford to kid ourselves that appearances don’t matter. Garden City just got a Dick’s Sporting Goods. In the tri-city area, guess which is going down first?

Every desolate, neglected, falling down residence feeds the decline.

Every dumped pile of trash, every business that needs repairs feeds the decline.

Every dead lawn, tree, derelict vehicle feeds the decline.

If you are fortunate enough to live by the places – and there are so many – your property is being stolen from you.

The city commission and code enforcement people are supposed to be on top of this – why aren’t they? Our taxes are high enough, surely, to pay decently for adequate help.

Don’t accept a dirty, run-down town. It’s the kiss of death. Call the folks who are supposed to keep the standards high.
