The offense may have struggled in the season opener, but the defense continued to give them chances, and the Redskins finally came through to earn a 1-0 win over the Wichita West Pioneers in the first round of the Titan Classic in Wichita Monday.
Liberal’s lone goal came midway through the second half after a corner kick led to a scramble in front of the Pioneer goal. Johnny Del Val took a shot that went in.
Wichita West had their chances in the first half with six corner kicks but couldn’t capitalize.
“The defense was shaky in the first half,” assistant coach Randolph Love said. “Then they minimized their mistakes in the second half. We still have some work to do. It is a new group playing together.”
West only had one shot attempt while the Redskins had 11. The Pioneers also did not have a corner kick attempt in the second half.
But the Redskins finally started to execute the triangle offense in the second half.
“It took a lot of persistence on the attack,” Love said. “We started moving the ball really well.”
The Redskins will face Maize Wednesday in the second round of the Titan Classic.
Maize advances with a 3-1 win over Wichita North.
“They have a good forward, he is a workhorse up top,” Love said. “They play good defense and counter attacks.”
