Former Liberal Redskin Reece Petty has joined the coaching staff at Iowa State University as a graduate assistant.
Petty played football for the Liberal Redskins through his senior season in 2004, and worked with coaches Gary Cornelsen and Steve Warner. Petty was named the Redskins of the Year by the Leader & Times in 2004 after his senior year where he was a standout on the football team as a receiver, on the basketball team as a member of the golf team.
Petty was a walk-on at the University of Kansas until his fifth year when he was placed on scholarship.
Petty played for head coach Mark Mangino and was a member of the 2008 Orange Bowl championship team as well as the 2008 Insight Bowl championship team.
Petty also earned First Team Academic All Big 12 honors in his final season at Lawrence.
After petty graduated from KU, he became an assistant football coach and basketball coach at Lansing High School where he assisted one of his former high school basketball coaches from Liberal, Rod Briggs.
After coaching at the high school level, Petty returned to KU as a strength and conditioning intern with the football team.
Petty’s former college coach, Mangino, became the offensive coordinator at Iowa State University earlier this year, and Mangino brought Petty on to help implement his offense with the Cyclones.
Petty and the Cyclones will open their season Aug. 30 by hosting North Dakota State. Iowa State will host Kansas State Sept.6.
