Charles Ray “Chuck” Smith, 79, died Sunday, March 28, 2010, at his residence in Liberal.
He was born June 23, 1930, to Raymond and Mildred (Wilson) Smith in Virgil.
He married Beverly Jean Green Nov. 7, 1948, in Reece. She died April 21, 2007.
He was a 1948 graduate of Eureka High School.
He was a mechanic, tool dresser and driller for Gehring Brothers Oil Company, a well service foreman and supervisor for Sohio Oil Company, self-employed at Chuck Smith Well Service from 1971 to 1974 and Well Check Inc. from 1979 to 1999 and a truck driver for Jim O’Grady Trucking from 1999 to present.
He was a former deacon of the Congregational Church in Gorham.
He was a former justice of the peace in Russell County and a member of the Liberal Elks Lodge BPOE No. 1947, the National Rifle Association and Recognition by Petroleum Pioneers. He completed the Kansas Carry Concealed Weapons Course.
Survivors include two sons, Charles Rockwell “Rocky” Smith and wife, Liz, Midland, Texas, and Logan Clay Smith, Liberal; one daughter, Kathy Jo Brack-Gilbert and husband, Dan, Satanta; seven grandchildren, Sarah Jean Holmes, Chance Rockwell Smith, Chelsea Rae Brack-Gardner, Addison Gates Smith, Declan Hunter Smith, Brendan Blaise Smith and Jentre Faith Smith; and three great-grandchildren, Bowen Holmes, Braedin Gardner and soon to be born Sean Gardner.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, one infant son, David, one daughter, Christie, one brother, Bill, and one sister Louise.
o Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Odle presiding.
Burial will follow at Restlawn Cemetery.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday with the family present to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
