My Mayor of Liberal Joe Denoyer

The recent rains has everything greening up and looking good across Liberal, we can hope and pray that the needed moisture continues. Also, with temperatures in the triple digits, it looks like summer is also upon us. With that, I hope everyone is enjoying family and friends and the amenities Liberal has to offer.

It has been a couple of months since I last updated you on what is going on in various departments throughout the city, but rest assured, crews and staff are hard at work for you.

We have recently seen the shooting range open with a fresh new look. Adventure Bay Waterpark is open also and busy every day, and the ball fields, parks, and Rec. programs are seeing families come out and enjoy what is offered.

The landing of the Learning Jet is a great addition to the air museum as they are also preparing and working diligently on their next exhibit, Megalodon: The Largest Shark That Ever Lived, that is scheduled to open in January of 2015.

Arkalon is also open for camping and fishing, while the Golf Course crew is busy with the cart path project.

The police and Municipal Court departments are continuing work on the E-Citation program which should cut down on paperwork, and allow for faster payment of tickets. This should be fully implemented by July.

Communications is also working with the Next Generation 911 system which allows for statewide tracking of 911 cell phone calls.

The street department was instrumental in the completion of the Shooting Range, while also working on the completion of the West 15th Street sidewalk project. They are also working with the building department in the area of weed control throughout the city.

The tourism department is now open 7 days a week and offers a wide variety of unique gifts from Kansas, Liberal and The Wizard of Oz.

City finance and administration is working tirelessly preparing for the annual audits and the 2015 Budgets.

With the recent passing of Housing and Economic Development incentives, staff is working on the recruitment of developers for housing, industry and retail with the attitude that The City of Liberal is “Open For Business.” All incentives for new and existing developments and businesses can be viewed at, www.chooseliberal.com. The Housing Department also has programs for homeowners as well, call City Hall for more details.

At the airport, work is getting ready to start on the reconstruction project with the airport taxiway, and staff is also preparing to assist with the 2014 Airshow, which will take place on Sept. 13.

Again, I can’t stress enough that Liberal is a community on the move, is always open to suggestions and ideas and is constantly at work for you.

Enjoy your summer.
