Kids learn science is awesome

ABOVE: To conclude the science demonstration, Melisa Westerman serenades two birthday boys from the audience with the “Happy Birthday” tune by throwing metal chimes on the ground. Each chime played a note from the song, resulting in a haphazard, unique rendition of the classic birthday song. L&T photos/Victoria Calderon

LEFT: Melisa Westerman, left, and assistant Betheny Thompson set a five-dollar bill on fire as part of the science demonstration for the summer reading program at Liberal Memorial Library. The bill was soaked in alcohol, so no harm was done to it when Westerman set the flame to it.
