The Seward County Community College/Area Technical School drama department has been busy all semester preparing for the performance of Neil Simon’s “Fools.” However, fools these students are not.

According to director Frank Challis, the work put into the play has required diligence and dedication – and they delivered.

“The play takes place in 1790 in a far remote Russian village,”

Challis explained. “We have a

situation here where the village has been cursed. The curse cannot be lifted unless certain tasks are performed.

“You will have to come to the play and see which tasks are performed to rid the village of this evil curse that has been placed upon them so they are fools,” he added.

According to Challis, the students have been working hard all semester in order to deliver a stellar performance to the community.

“We started working on this play back in early September,” he said.

“It has been an all-semester project. We have had rehearsals in the daytime and at night.

“You can tell when you come and see how many lines they have memorized that there has been a lot of time put into it,” he added.

“Everyone has learned to speak with thick Russian accents, suitable for Liberal, Kan., of course.”

Challis said he has produced Neil Simon plays in the past and they have always gone over well with the community.

“I have done several Neil Simon plays in the past so I wanted to be sure to do another one because I always enjoy Neil Simon,” he said.

“And the audiences respond well to him.”

There will be two performances of “Fools” both Friday and Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the Showcase Theater located in the Shank Humanities Building. General admission will be $3, and $2 will be charged for seniors. Courtesy card holders and students will be admitted free of charge with their cards or identification.
