Maurice O. Mitchell, 83, died May 28, 2014, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

He was born April 25, 1931, to James Leslie and Thelma Sherrill Mitchell in Beaver County.

He married Kathryn McPherson on June 15, 1956, at the First Christian Church in Hooker, Okla. She survives.

He graduated from Adams High School in 1950.

He then graduated from Panhandle A&M in Goodwell, Okla., in 1954 with a degree in Agronomy.

He worked as a soil scientist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service. He was Soil Conservationist of the Year in 1975. He also worked as Unit Supervisor for the McAlester, Oklahoma Soil Conservation District before taking over his family's farm.

He was a member of the First Christian Church in Hooker, where he served as Sunday school teacher, chairman of the Board and as an elder and deacon.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Guymon, Okla.

Other survivors include brothers, James Mitchell and wife, Josephine, Albuquerque, N.M., Dwayne Mitchell and wife, Donnie, Spearman, Texas, Auburn Mitchell and wife, Sara, Austin, Texas; sisters, Mignon Sullivan and husband, Gale, Lewisville, Texas and Evonne Roberson and husband, Dee, Edmond, Okla.; sisters-in-law, Jean McPherson, San Antonio, Texas and Patricia Williams, Bolivar, Mo.; brother-in-law, Jim McPherson and wife, Rudena, Muskogee, Okla.; aunt, Avanell Mitchell, Liberal; and  several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers-in-law, Norman McPherson and Ted Williams.

• Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Christian Church in Hooker, Okla. with the Rev. Roy Berkley presiding.

Burial will be at the Hooker Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church in Hooker and may be left in the care of Roberts Brothers Funeral Home, Box 745, Hooker, OK 73945.
