Offseason workouts more than T-shirt slogans PDF Print E-mail

Champions will be built this summer, and if not here, than somewhere else.

By the time the fans pile in to Redskin Field or the Big House, or even at South and West to watch a game, we may think that a good week of practice or a talented player will lead the team to victory.

Chances are very low that simply showing up to practice at the beginning of the season is good enough.

The truth is building an athlete doesn’t happen during the regular season. That has to be done in the off-season, and while our student athletes may be basking in the joys of summer since school is out, they will need to get in the weight room and into camps if they want to be competitive when it comes time to put on a uniform.

Liberal High School provides a number of off-season camps, and so does Seward County Community College.

Make sure your kids ae getting to these camps.

Make sure they are getting to the weight room.

I see a number of kids wearing T-shirts with slogans about hard work. One I like is, “To be No. 1 you have to train like you’re No. 2.”

I guarantee you in other pockets across the state there are kids participating in off-season activities.

When Liberal was dominating in the 1990s, the weight room was packed, camps were full, and so were rosters when school was back in session.

We need to make sure our kids are staying active this summer, and that means getting them to the weight room and to the summer camps. They should participate in summer leagues, whether recreation or traveling.

It doesn’t mater if they don’t think they can lift or run fast right now. If they don’t do the workouts, they never will. Success doesn’t just happen, it has to be pursued, caught, and tackled all summer long.

The sweat and skill developed in the summer is what leads to success in the fall, winter and spring.

At worst, your child is in better physical shape. But the lessons learned in the off-season about commitment, dedication and sacrifice will pay off when they want it to mater the most.

As parents, our job is to get them there.
