Late runs net Lady Mustangs a split PDF Print E-mail

The Southwestern Heights Lady Mustangs were on the verge of being swept by the Stanton County Lady Trojans, but a seventh inning rally in Game 2 gave the Lady Mustangs a 9-8 win after dropping game one, 12-11.

Heights trailed Stanton County 8-6 heading into the seventh inning of Game 2 of their doubleheader. The Lady Trojans had taken the lead with four runs in the fifth and another two in the sixth. But Heights rallied to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a one-run win.

The Lady Mustangs started Game 2 well, scoring two in the first and three in the second to take a 5-0 lead.

Heights then went scoreless until the fifth when they added one to tie the game at six.

Viancy Jiminez led the Lady Mustangs offensive attack going 2-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored; Dakoda Cox also went 2-3 with a double, a walk, a stolen base, and two runs scored. Lexi Stark was 1-3 with a walk, a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Maria Gutierrez got an RBI single and scored a run in her only at bat.

Stark pitched four and one-third innings, giving up two earned runs, seven hits, and three walks, while striking out one. Cox pitched two and two-thirds innings, allowing one earned run, five hits, and one walk, while striking out four.

In Game 1, Heights rallied late as well, but came up just short, losing 12-11.

Stanton County broke up a 4-4 tie with six runs in the top of the fifth. Heights rallied with seven runs in the final two innings, but Stanton County's last two runs in the seventh won the game.

The Lady Mustangs had scored two in the first inning, and held Stanton County scoreless until they scored three in the third.

The Lady Trojans added another in the fourth, and Heights tied it in the bottom half with two.

Dakoda Cox was 3-4 with a stolen base and two runs scored; Kiana Collins was 2-4 with three RBI, a stolen base, and a run scored. Danielle Sanchez was 1-4 with a double, an RBI, a stolen base, and a run scored.

Rachel Amerin pitched four and two-thirds innings, allowing three earned runs, seven hits and three walks, and striking out five. Stark pitched two and one-third innings, allowing one earned run, four hits, three walks, and striking out one.

Heights (6-4) will travel to Sublette today for another doubleheader.
