KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Shawn Leann Walker, 53, died April 1st, 2014, at the Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care Center in Kansas City, Mo. after a long battle with ovarian cancer.
She was born Oct. 6, 1960 to Darrell and Irene Horton Walker in Emporia at St. Mary’s Hospital.
She was most proud of her 17-year career with the Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service Center in Kansas City, Mo. After her mother’s death in a car crash in the early 1980s, she pursued a lawsuit into the faulty brakes on her mother’s vehicle, which led to safer vehicles for scores of drivers.
Survivors include her sister Kelley Pike of Emporia and her niece Jennifer Pike, now her medical externship, toward a Master of Science Degree in Speech Pathology at Wichita State University; her sister and brother-in-law, Joley and Bob Schmidt and their sons Justin and Ben, Durango, Colo.; first cousins, Julie Haase and Patty Springman, Emporia; Aaron Wayne Hawkins, Shawn’s beloved foster child; and devoted friend William T. (W. T.) Dittman, Kansas City, Mo. She also leaves behind three Schnauzers: Alaska, Hattie Marie and Rachel Renee.
• Memorial service will be on May 3, 2014, at 6:30 p.m. at the Grand River Chapel at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo.
Because of the rare nature of her cancer and her desire to prevent the suffering of others, Shawn’s wishes were to have her body donated to scientific research. Her remains will later be interred at the site of her father’s grave in Emporia.
