The Turpin Cardinals got a unique experience Saturday as they took on 3A No.11 Heavner at the Bricktown Ballpark, the home field of the Houston Astros’ Triple A affiliate the Oklahoma City Redhawks. Turpin led early but committed eight errors, losing 10-2.
“Going into the game we didn’t know much about them other than they were ranked No.11 in 3A and traditionally a very good baseball town,” Cardinals manager Mario Mendoza said. “We hung in them but we had a couple of bad innings in the field and that was the difference. I was pleased other than that and it was a great experience.”
Turpin fell behind 1-0 in the top half of the first, but answered quickly. Jordon Lujan led off and reached base on an error. Hunter Clark and Kyler Musgrave each singled to load the bases. Then with two outs, George Dominguez singled in two run to put the Cardinals on top 2-1.
Heavner added three runs off of three errors in the third; three in the fifth off two errors, and three more in the sixth off of three errors.
Heavner finished with seven hits, Turpin with six.
Kyler Musgrave pitched five innings, giving up six hits, a walk, and striking out seven. Jordon Lujan pitched two innings and gave up one hit, one walk, and struck out four.
George Dominguez was 2-3 with 2 RBI; Kyler Musgrave was 2-3, and Hunter Clark 1-3 with a run scored.
“The atmosphere was great we had to get the ‘awes’ out of us,” Mendoza said. “We had good alumni support, had a bunch there. It was a great experience, and we are thankful to everybody who helped make this trip possible.”
Turpin travels to Laverne today.
