The Southwestern Heights Lady Mustangs opened their softball season with a split at Hugoton. Heights took the first game 21-10, and then lost the second 14-4.

In Game 1 Hugoton scored four in each of the first two innings to take an 8-3 lead. Heights still trailed by five runs after three innings (9-4), but rallied for six runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth to take a 14-9 lead.

Another six runs in the seventh sealed the win for the Lady Mustangs.

"We played well and competed," Lady Mustangs coach JR Mendoza said. "We played hard to the end."

Heights tallied 13 hits and collected 10 walks, while striking out seven times.

Lexi Stark was 2-2 with three walks, three RBI and a stolen base. Dakoda Cox was 2-4 with an RBI and a stolen base. Sara Eakes was 2-5 with and RBI, a walk and a stolen base, and Rachel Amerin was 2-6 with an RBI and a stolen base.

Rachel Amerin went the distance on the mound, giving up eight hits, ten walks and striking out seven.

Game 2 was a different story.

After scoring 21 runs, the Lady Mustangs only scored four in the second game.

Both teams went scoreless in the first inning. Hugoton led 3-1 after two. Heights closed the gap with a run in the third, and scored two in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead.

But Hugoton answered back with five runs in the bottom half of the fourth, and added another six in the fifth.

Danielle Sanchez was 1-2 with an RBI triple, a walk, and two stolen bases. Dakoda Cox was 1-2 with an RBI, and Sara Eakes was 1-2 with a walk and two stolen bases.

Lexi Stark took the loss on the mound, giving up seven earned runs and seven walks.

Heights (1-1) will host Elkhart Thursday.
