MIDWEST CITY, Okla.—The Forgan Bulldogs scored the first 19 points of their opening round game of the Class B State Tournament at Carl Albert High School. Forgan then tried to avoid injury and rest theirstarters as much as possible in a 78-40 romp of the Cave Springs Hornets.
“I thought we got off to a good start and thought we did a good job of attacking them,” Bulldogs coach Todd Kerr said. “We did a good job of keeping them away from the rim and making everything tough on them. We really defended them well tonight”
Forgan finally gave up their first point at the free throw line with 30.7 seconds left in the first quarter.
Luis Ordonez flipped in a shot at the buzzer to put the Bulldogs up 23-1 at the end of the first.
A 17-3 run in the second quarter pushed the lead to 31. But the run did not come without a cost. Jace Kerr hit the floor hard, injuring his ankle with 4:51 left in the first half.
Kerr did not play the rest of the game, partly because of injury, partly because of the Bulldogs huge lead.
“I think he’ll be ok,” Todd Kerr said confidently.
Cave Springs had their best stretch to start the second half, outscoring Forgan 11-8 over the first five minutes of the third to cut the lead to 26.
Forgan answered with an 11-0 run that including three treys to end the quarter up 61-24.
The Bulldogs rested their starters as much as possible in the second half to be rested for Friday’s game, but also to avoid the rough, physical play Cave Springs played throughout.
“My kids acted exactly the way we expect them to act and how we teach them to act,” Kerr said. “We were really proud of how they handled themselves.”
Nine of ten Bulldogs found the bottom of the net with Chandler Bryer scoring a game-high 16. Bryer did much of his damage at the line, sinking 7 of 8 free throws. Jace Kerr scored 13 in less than 12 minutes of play; Luis Ordonez also scored 13, Trevin Lopez 10, Demetrius Alston 7, and David Stout 7 off the bench.
Forgan will face defending state champion Arnett tonight at 9 with the winner advancing to the title game Saturday. Forgan defeated Arnett by 20 at Arnett during the regular season.
Arnett is also the team Forgan defeated by 34 to win the state title in 2012.
