The Southwestern Heights Mustangs saw their season come to an end Monday night, but not without one last effort to save it. Heights rallied from 10 down, but fell just short in a 56-54 loss at Kingman in the first round of the sub-state playoffs.
Nathan Johnsrud led the Mustangs with 17 points, including three treys and 7 of 14 shooting from the field. Cody Jennings scored was 5-9 from the field and 5-7 at the free throw line for 15 points and grabbed five boards. Brandon Kinser was 3-3 from beyond the arc for 9 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Jorge Dela Torre had 12 rebounds and scored 5.
Heights fell behind 15-11 in the first quarter. Both teams picked up the pace at the offensive end in the second quarter with Kingman outscoring Heights 29-24 to take a 44-35 lead into halftime.
Then in the third, both teams went cold and the defenses got stout. After a quarter in which the two teams combined for 53 points, Kingman 'outscored' Heights 3-2 in the third to make the score 47-37 heading into the fourth.
Heights rallied to a 17-9 advantage, but could not overcome Kingman, ending their season.
Heights finished with a record of 11-10.
