The Hooker Lady Bulldogs have made their living in the paint this season, but faced a team who's strength matched them in the Thomas Lady Terriers. Hooker will now have to take the long road to make it to the state tournament after losing 65-41 in the regional championship game.
“They gave us trouble because they were so big and physical,” Lady Bulldogs coach Ray Kennedy said. “We struggled with that, and their guards were good size and athletic as well.”
Thomas took control early and led 16-11 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Bulldogs deficit was up to nine by half (33-24).
Thomas pushed the lead to double-digits in the third (48-33), and put the game away in the fourth with a 16-8 advantage.
“We were getting it where we wanted to, but when we got it there it was tough to do anything with it,” Kennedy said. “We weren't able to get to the line either, because of the way the game was called.”
Kyra Cathcart led the Lady Bulldogs with 17 points and five rebounds. Shania Miller added 10, including a pair of threes and also contributed five assists. Mariana Cervantes scored 9 and grabbed 6 boards, and Jessica Ugarte had four steals.
Hooker (21-3) will face Hennessey Thursday in the first round of the area tournament with tip-off set for 6:30 at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford.
