Southwestern Heights won its first Hi-Plains League title in 20 years by trampling Cimarron 67-38 Thursday in the Corral.

The Mustangs busted out of the gate, scoring the first eight points in the game ad forcing Cimarron to take an early time out.

By the end of the first quarter the Mustangs had the Blue Jays in a daze with a 21-2 lead.

Six Mustangs scored in the period including a Ben Johnsrud three and another three from Wes Winfrey. Cody Eakes also connected on his first two shots of the game.

Cimarron settled down in the second quarter and played closer to the Mustangs, but Heights was able to maintain the big lead and had a 35-15 lead at half.

The Mustangs were back to the high octane offense in the third. Oscar Sigala scored nine in the third to lead the Mustangs to a 22-point period. The Blue Jays hit three threes but not much else in the third quarter.

The Mustangs cleared the bench early in the fourth in the 67-38 win.

“We are playing our best ball at the right time,” Height coach Chad Novack said. “We continue to work on our free throw shooting.”

Sigala led all scorers with 19, Jacob Flores had 12, Cory Ryan scored 11, Winfrey had eight, and Eakes scored seven.

Heights (17-3) will host Goodland at 6:30 p.m. Monday to open Sub-State.
